Language Center

Welcome to the Kvænangen Language Center. We work to preserve, promote, and develop the Kven language (kvensk) and the languages and cultures of the national minorities and Sami people of our region.

What we do

The Language Center offers language courses, curated learning resources, and cultural activities for residents and newcomers of all ages. We collaborate with schools, kindergartens, and community organisations across Kvænangen to keep our linguistic heritage alive.

About the Kven language and culture

The Kven people are a recognised national minority in Norway, with roots in Finnish migration to Northern Norway over several centuries. Kven (kvensk) is an officially recognised minority language. Each year on 16 March we mark Kvenfolkets dag — the Kven People’s Day — and the Language Center encourages everyone to take part.
